Winning Edge: enTourage eDGe

Called the "coolest textbook ever" by PC World, the dual-screen enTourage eDGe is one of the smartest things to happen to education.

It's a combination e-reader and tablet computer that makes learning fun. The enTourage eDGe weighs only 3 pounds but can hold thousands of e-books. On one side is an e-reader that lets you take notes right on the book you're reading. On the other is a color tablet, where you can browse the web, watch lectures, and download new books.

My teenaged kids confirmed it as well, saying they couldn't do much with just a dedicated e-reader. They wanted Internet connectivity, email, Facebook, games; they're part of a very tech-savvy generation that has high expectations for gadgets.

What's the inspiration behind the enTourage eDGe? "We saw a gap in the e-reader market for a device that could combine reading with note taking, Web surfing, email, Word/PowerPoint/Excel and music and video playing and recording, which would ultimately enhance the learning process as well," said Asghar Mostafa, CEO of enTourage Systems, in an interview with E-Reader-Info.com. "My teenaged kids confirmed it as well, saying they couldn't do much with just a dedicated e-reader. They wanted Internet connectivity, email, Facebook, games; they're part of a very tech-savvy generation that has high expectations for gadgets."

A Digital Generation

Though the eDGe appeals to all consumers, it is particularly well-suited to the educational market because students can download e-textbooks on the device, take notes, draw diagrams, record lectures, and leverage the Internet to pull up more information, images or view hyperlinks from e-textbooks. The eDGe even comes with its own e-book store, so it can offer books and documents based on customer demand.

As for the capital "DG" in eDGe: It stands for digital generation – a generation that continues to thrive on technology.
